Greenhouses

If the idea is to maximise food output for space availability, greenhouses work well as a community garden. Vertical farming is farming upwards instead of outwards. Greenhouses facilitate this form of farming. To a point, raised beds in greenhouses assist in accessibility. Greenhouses protect crops from the elements. Transparent walls and roofs in greenhouses allow the sun to stream through. Reticulation is a must in greenhouses as the plants within have no access to natural sources of water. A huge disadvantage of greenhouses tends to be the large establishment costs. Another disadvantage is that the plants are separate from the Earth. This means the soil, which is an ecosystem and provides much nutrients for crops, is less natural and needs more human interference to maintain balance.

I acknowledge the Whadjuk People of the Noongar nation who are the Traditional Custodians of the land, sea and air that I live, study and work on. I also acknowledge the Yamatji People who are the Traditional Custodians of my birthplace. I give, with a willing soul, due regard to all Indigenous Peoples across the globe and all Elders past, present and future. Furthermore, I recognise the inherent value of Indigenous connection to country and Indigenous spiritual belief systems. First Nations People occupied Australia prior to colonisation. No white law will ever change that.
