Response from Wanneroo Community Garden

On 31 January, 2025 I received a response from the Wanneroo Community in the City of Wanneroo. As the responder was not a founding member and they could not answer some of the questions as the volunteer group for the community garden is small due to the fact they only open on weekends.

Ongoing costs

would be insurance, Garden supplies such as mulch, fertiliser, wetta soil.  This year we will need to pay an accountant to prepare a tax return as this has now become a requirement.  We do not currently have a treasurer.

Current funding

is limited.  We have not applied for grants recently.  These require a lot of time for the application and a specific purpose. our only income is membership fees and Cash for cans

I can't recommend any grants as I have never applied for any.

2 best crops.

Depends on the season.  In the past sweetcorn has done well, last winter we had great Cauliflowers.  Currently Zucchini are doing well and we have a large passionfruit vine.  Others may be able to answer this question better.

2 worst crops.

Not sure

We use compost, fertiliser and make Hugel beds as much as possible.  There would be worms in these.

Indigenous crops.

We do have a few bush tucker plants.

Synthesis from Wanneroo Community Garden

There is a lesson in not documenting the beginning or keeping track of what works and what doesn't. When information is stored only in people's heads it is non-transferrable. This makes synthesis and data collection for improvement challenging. However, I am still grateful for the response as it teaches a lot. Sometimes, it is not what information put in but what is left out that educates.

I acknowledge the Whadjuk People of the Noongar nation who are the Traditional Custodians of the land, sea and air that I live, study and work on. I also acknowledge the Yamatji People who are the Traditional Custodians of my birthplace. I give, with a willing soul, due regard to all Indigenous Peoples across the globe and all Elders past, present and future. Furthermore, I recognise the inherent value of Indigenous connection to country and Indigenous spiritual belief systems. First Nations People occupied Australia prior to colonisation. No white law will ever change that.
